| Created and led by Porchlight Music Theatre Artistic Associates, Off the Porch follows the great tradition of Chicago theatre by offering an experimental space and safe environment for the exploration and creation of new musicals, adaptations, and plays with music. Through this series, Porchlight nurtures local talent by providing human and artistic resources to support the development of new musical works and to cultivate and showcase the best Chicago-based composers and playwrights.
The 2006-2007 season saw The Teapot Scandals play the
Porchlight Music Theatre main stage. Created by Porchlight Artistic Associate Jon Steinhagen who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the show, this Jeff-Recommended production enjoyed Off the Porch support from conception to stage. The National Alliance for Musical Theatre awarded the project a $3,000 development grant. The play merited an After Dark Award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics and a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for Best New Work - Musical.
Over the course of the 2006-2007 season, Off the Porch hosted a Halloween Salon featuring new songs and public readings of two works in development - A Maid Without the Means or The Times and Any Someone At All.
Off the Porch is planning another insight into the developmental world of music theater with its 2007-2008 series. These exciting evenings of cutting edge musical theatre are "Subscriber Events" and are included in season subscriptions at no additional cost. |
